I hear you’re going on a journey; on an adventure! I’m SO happy for you. You’re going to be forming the person you’ve always been and have always you’ll be finding pieces of yourself that you didn’t know existed.
You’re going to be finding courage that you didn’t know you had. These experiences will push you in ways you didn’t think you could be pushed. Your emotions will be tested (as well as your sanity!) as you wander this world that is begging to be understood.
Let yourself be scared.
Tell your comfort zone to get lost and let your only limit be time. Absorb these moments as though they’ll be your last. Lose the control you’ve so desperately sought for so long.
This is your time to be completely absorbed in your surroundings. Listen to the birds as you people watch in the park. Taste every morsel of that chocolate cake as you dine in your contentment.
When I tell you to put the phone down, please listen.
As an avid Instagrammer, I get it. I get that desire to capture the perfect photo in an attempt to prolong the joy you feel in that moment. But believe me when I say that you will remember these moments with or without a picture.
All those moments that prove dire to the formation of who you are, you will remember! You will remember that time you realized that YOU made this happen. You will remember that time you befriended a local and delved into their culture with insatiable curiosity. You will remember that time you first dined on real Italian pasta (mine had tuna, olive oil, paprika, and black olives!)
Take this time to befriend yourself.
Become your best friend. No one can take care of yourself quite like you can. Prove to yourself that you can not only survive on your own, but thrive on your own. Make this your duty as you absorb the diversity that is so imperative within our world today.
Laugh a lot. Laugh when you feel like crying and continually remind yourself how privileged you are to be where you are. You are beyond privileged to be able to travel and expand your worldly knowledge that so many take for granted. Understand that you must use this privilege to better the world, to spread your culture and understand others. Help bring this broken world together, even if that just means using your manners.
You are a representation of your nation, your culture, and your people. Show the world what that stands for. Prove to the world that your nation isn’t its stereotypes, that your culture isn’t something to be scared of, and that your people are kind.
Last but not least, enjoy yourself.
Enjoy this time as you explore your inner most thoughts and the space that you occupy in the world. Your personal being has meaning and purpose, use travel as a tool to find that.
